What Is Campanology?

A campanologist is a bell ringer - someone who rings bells in a church tower.  It is a long word for a hobby that few outside of bellringing circles will have heard of. 

Strictly speaking, campanology is the study of bells, but this is a simple pun page not a Wikipedia entry.

Bell ringers gather in the ringing chamber, a church room where the ropes hang down.  They pull the ropes.  This needs to be coordinated with the other ringers in order to produce the pleasant almost hypnotic sound of the bells pealing.  

There was some discussion about bell ringing becoming a sport but there is really no need.  Good fun if you are into it but not the most televisual of pastimes.
