Equality Designs
This is a page of my equality designs. They are intended to pull people together, be uplifting and affirming. Bright attractive images with a message.
I don't go on marches any more. Creating these designs is my form of protest.
Foreword
Who would think that simple calls for equality could generate their own division and hatred?
That is the world we live in. Here are some brief thoughts.
All equality designs are equal. Except they are not. One man's equality can be another man's oppression. It is a minefield.
Orwell memorably said "All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others".
In our confused world we are set one against the other in a whole range of areas.
Men v women
Black v white
Straight v gay
Left v right
Rich v poor
Left to our own devices most humans want the basics - shelter, food, family. Our political masters and media need us to be constantly occupied by division and fear. It makes us easier to manipulate.
This page includes Black Lives Matter obviously but it aims to be more inclusive than that. We really should not be fighting each other all the time.
Be Different
Let's start by accepting and celebrating difference.
Black Lives Matter
What could be simpler than the Black Lives Matter slogan? Of course they matter.
The BLM movement was partly fuelled by a number of police shootings of black people and the high profile nature of perceived and real unfairness.
Sadly the movement hit its own problems.
Do black lives matter to the exclusion of other lives in order to redress the old imbalances?
Or is that just a misleading position placed by the alt-right for their own twisted agenda?
It is impossible to take a balanced or nuanced view anymore as the Twitter brigade descend on anyone who does not toe the current party line. Meanwhile racism - both real and sometimes imagined (well done Jussie) - continues to rear its uniquely American head.
There are two graphics below for the Black Lives Matter slogan. First, an American flag design.
And then the ubiquitous fist with a statement in front of it. A more aggressive way of stating a position.
Diversity
It is a unifying graphic to join people together rather than dividing them.
The point being we are all human. Let's start from there, treat everyone with respect and kindness, celebrate our diversity and strive for equality.
Equality
As All Lives Matter is now banned, being a slogan that some people find offensive, I still wanted to make the point for everyone being treated equally regardless of race, color or creed.
The Equality design below attempts to do that. Even in the most hysterical attempt to find offence where none exists and to sow division, surely a design that supports equality for all is acceptable?
The point of the graphic is to show a mix of people and a positive call for Equality. The real equality, not the kind which promotes one section of society above another.
Equity
Equity means equality of outcome regardless of origin. So no matter how much or little of a silver spoon you were born with, we all end up with the same chances.
Should Nepo babies have the same chances as everyone else? Of course they should.
Good Trouble
I am not American or an expert on the history of Civil Rights. I came across the phrase "Good Trouble" while reading something and found it inspirational.
It's from a quote by John Lewis who was an American Civil Rights activist and then a Representative. He said "Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and help redeem the soul of America."
He sounds like a good guy. It's a memorable and meaningful quote.
Handshake
My Handshake Anti-Racist design is a simple graphic handshake between two people - black and white. A strong positive message for friendship and unity instead of raised fists or angry slogans.
How much better it would be if we just shook hands instead of constant conflict.
I didn't think it needed words.
Hope Not Hate
The perfect statement. Hope is a positive word, and the Not Hate addition stresses the point. Let's all hope for a future where we can get along with each other, regardless of our differences.
We're all in this journey together. All hoping for a good outcome.
Human Rights
All of us need basic human rights. Doesn't matter who we are, where we come from, what language we speak or religion we follow, or don't - we deserve to be treated with fairness and dignity.
That's why the laws, such as they are, are important. People have slowly worked towards making our political and justice systems fairer for all. These wins are important to preserve.
No Justice No Peace
A statement and barely concealed threat in one simple phrase.
I'm not a fan of angry statements. But sometimes they need to be said.
Not Equal
Rather than using a lot of words it is a simple enough design taken out of context and put on a shirt.
Oddly, although the original purpose was protesting inequality, it can also be viewed as a statement for individualism. I am not equal for example.
We are all individuals seeking equality. Now that is a conundrum.
Pride
Rainbow People
Rainbow Stickmen People is an early favourite design of mine.
The simplicity and vulnerability of the stick figures, the rainbow colour faces, the general togetherness and equality of the stick people add up to create a fun graphic with a message.
That's the art critic explanation. I just happened to like it, and it was all I was up to drawing at that part of my development.
Refugees Welcome
People fleeing war, terror or economic hardship in search of a better life deserve better than barbed wire defences.
That position is morally correct but a political nightmare.
Cramming refugees into sink estates amidst economic deprivation in the West leads to issues. Migrants are an easy target for our problems rather than questioning the economic policies of financial and political leaders.
Creating refugee crises by undermining foreign goverments, introducing sanctions, supporting dodgy regimes and bombing are the fault of our politicians. Undermining unions and wages by using cheap immigrants is the fault of our corporate thiefs.
Refugees and migrants are the innocent victims in the twisted world order. It seems reasonable to welcome them.
Silence Is Violence
A simple rhyming expression illustrated by using a pair of shushed lips behind the statement.
The idea behind the statement is that by remaining silent about oppression the quiet people are as guilty of it as the oppressors.
If you stay silent long enough eventually they will come for you.
Stay Woke
Some time later I realised the design was only a problem at RB and nowhere else. So below is a reloaded version for tees, facemasks, etc.
It is not much of a design. Slogans seldom are - it is hard, sometimes impossible to find an angle to make it work. But the "OK" in red lifts it a little. Because Staying Woke is OK.
Stop Asian Hate
One is hatred against Asians. At one point being blamed for Covid and attacked by people without thought.
The other sad thing is the continual separation of humans into groups. White, black, Asians - our rulers want to divide us and keep us down.
Will people ever realize the pointlessness of division and rise up as one?
Stronger Together
Inclusive, colorful and fun.
Suffragette
One of the earliest equality movements, the Suffragettes protested, suffered and eventually paved the way for women to be given the vote.
An extraordinary feminist movement for a basic equality we take for granted nowadays.
If the Suffragette movement were around today they would be proscribed under our Terrorism laws. Sometimes it feels like we haven't progressed much.
Take A Knee
The idea of Take A Knee is to refuse to stand for the National Anthem and instead kneel to show respect for victims of racism.
It is a neat way to make a powerful point in a visual way - ideal for the image generation. No one gets hurt, some are emboldened and others are offended.
An interesting contrast in world views is the attitude towards taking a knee. Some call it disrespecting the National Anthem. It was banned by the USA NFL for a while - and then allowed as Black Lives Matter protests became popular and the NFL bowed to the opinions of social media.
Meanwhile in Hong Kong a new law makes it illegal to disrespect the National Anthem (of China). Not much difference between Communism and Democracy legal overreach really.
Trans Rights
It is as valid for trans people as anyone else.
The design below uses the trans colors and my "Free" design to create the message.
Unity
It is the direct opposite to the divisions created to keep the people preoccupied with squabbles. To divide and rule.
United We Stand
United We Stand continues the theme of unity with rainbow people above the slogan.
If we humans could settle our differences and achieve unity of purpose we could achieve so much.
We Are The 99%
Why should the rich elite own most of the world's wealth? It is impossible to answer morally.
The design features a mixture of ordinary people - not politicians, elite, globalists or celebrities - who are simply asking for a fair share.
We The People
They are powerful words which include the people in the Constitution. To be guarded against updating such as from "We" to "You The People".
We the people are included. We have a right and a voice. Be wary of those who would try to change it.
Did I Change Anything?
If only a few designs could change the world. I could close this page and sit back thinking "job done". Maybe move on to world hunger and poverty.
On the plus side, I don't think my designs are any more useless than the massed ranks of duplicitous politicians.
So there's that.
